Natural Skin Care: 6 tips to improve the look of your skin

Natural, gentle, and simple ways to get healthy, beautiful skin.

Are you tired of looking tired, covering up blotchy red skin, or just want your skin to look and feel nourished? Well, we have uncovered some great tips that you probably haven’t thought of when it comes to your skin care regime.

Lock in Water

Water is an essential part of skin care. And while drinking plenty of it definitely contributes to healthy looking skin, the fact is water will reach other organs before it reaches the skin. Because of this, you need to lock in water in two ways – by drinking it, and applying it. That is where moisturizer comes in. It locks in the moisture provided by water and prevents it from evaporating, keeping your skin hydrated. After showering, you have about 3 minutes to get that moisturizer on in order to maximize its benefits.

Drink Green Tea

With soothing, anti-inflammatory properties green tea is great for red or blotchy skin. If redness is due to rosacea, iced green tea is best. More than evening out skin tone, the epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) in it can help prevent the destruction of collagen. And less collagen leads to wrinkles, as well as sun-induced DNA damage.

Eat your Tomatoes

Researchers have found that a pigment in tomatoes called lycopene can help protect the skin from UV damage. And 85% of lycopene in Western diets is obtained from tomatoes, particularly cooked tomato paste or sauce. Improved sun protection offers anti-aging benefits as well as boosts our skin’s overall health.

Increase Blood Flow

Exercise isn’t just good for your health, it helps keep your skin looking vibrant thanks to increased blood flow. Blood flow is important because it carries oxygen and nutrients to working cells throughout the body, and helps flush cellular debris, such as free radicals, out of the system.

Researchers from McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, had some incredible results from a study they conducted on this. When a group of volunteers aged 65 plus started running or cycling at a moderately strenuous pace for 30 minutes twice a week, they found the outer and inner layers of their skin looked similar to those of 20-40 year olds after a 3 month period.

Consume Plenty of Veggies

Want a sun-kissed glow? Various studies have found that eating plenty of fruits and vegetables, and not the sun, is the most effective way to improve skin colour. That’s right, in this study from the University of Nottingham, researchers found that people who eat more portions of fruits and vegetables per day had a more golden skin colour, thanks to substances called carotenoids which gives natural produce its colouring.

Your Sleep Schedule and Position Matter

If you want beautiful skin, sleep is essential. Lack of sleep leads to tired, dull, pale looking skin. In fact, a study published on University Hospitals found that skin ages up to 50% faster in those that don’t get enough sleep. Eight hours of quality sleep a night should be the goal, but seven is enough to make a noticeable difference.

Leading cosmetology experts are also drawing attention to how we sleep. I’m a side sleeper myself but it looks like it’s time to switch to my back. This is because burying your face in the pillow, although quite comfortable, leads to those dark circles and puffiness around the eyes. The best sleep position for younger, healthier looking skin is on the back, propped up by two pillows so that your head is well above your body.
