About Matricaria Flower Extract
An extract derived from the Matricaria (Chamomilla Recutita) plant, a white and yellow annual flower with an aromatic smell that is native to parts of Europe and Asia, but can now be found in North America and Australia as well. As the name implies, it is a common source for the herbal treatment chamomile lotion, however it is not the only source.
The medicinal benefits of Matricaria extract have been known for thousands of years. Historically it has been used internally as a tonic to help calm the stomach, and applied topically to sooth irritated and inflamed skin.
How It Works
Matricaria flower extract has natural healing and skin protective properties. It contains tannic acid, a substance commonly found in creams, sun creams, eye lotions and antiperspirants, and has natural astringent and skin calming properties.
Recent research has shown that chamomile has antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory and some antimutagenic properties. Chamomile has also demonstrated moderate antimicrobial, antiviral and antioxidant properties. Combined, these help matricaria extract speed healing and promote overall skin health. When used twice daily, a recent study has shown that a chamomile compress is as effective as hydrocortisone ointment in treating skin lesions.
Common Concerns
Matricaria Flower Extract is considered to be extremely safe and a non-irritant when applied topically. Some individuals who have an allergy to, or are sensitive to, the Asteraceae/Compositae plant (ragweed, chrysanthemums, marigolds, etc.) may have an allergic reaction.
There are a few risks associated with the consumption of chamomile, including interaction with some medications, especially those for blood thinners, nausea and vomiting, and may possibly cause miscarriage in pregnancy. However, in most of these cases, risk only occurs from consuming very large quantities of chamomile. The chamomile used in Nature’s Aid products is only applied topically and is found in much smaller concentrations. If you have any medical concerns, please consult your healthcare practitioner.
